More than 10 million car accidents occur each year in the United States. While many of these car accidents only involve property damage, some also involve serious injuries. This article will review 10 of the things that you should remember to do after a car accident.
Do Not Drive Away From an Accident Scene

Protect Yourself at the Scene of the Accident
To avoid being struck by other motorists who pass the scene of an accident, light some road flares or use your vehicle’s flashers to alert oncoming traffic. You should also avoid standing in an area where you are likely to be hit by oncoming motorists.
Contact Law Enforcement
Even if no one was injured in the car accident, it is still a wise idea to contact law enforcement. Creating an accident report at the scene will help you when dealing with insurance companies.

Record the Details of the Accident
When law enforcement arrives at the scene of the accident, you should make sure to inform them exactly how the accident occurred. Avoid guessing or speculating any details and never admit guilt. Make certain that anyone who is involved in the accident also provides accurate information and if they do not, make sure to record your disagreement with their version.

Take Pictures of the Accident Scene
Today, many people have cell phones equipped with cameras that can be used to document the accident scene. If you are injured in the accident, you should always take photographs of the injuries you received. If it is impossible to take photographs at the scene of the accident, do so as soon as possible afterward.
Exchange Information
In many situations, investigating law enforcement obtains information from the parties that are involved in an accident. If law enforcement is not involved, you should make sure to obtain the name, contact information, and insurance information for all people who are involved in the accident.
Report the Accident
Notify your insurance company as soon as possible after an accident occurs. Many insurance policies require drivers to immediately report accidents.
Obtain Medical Attention
Many times, injuries caused by motor vehicle accidents are not immediately apparent. Some accident victims do not notice until later that they have been seriously injured. If you are not certain whether you have been injured, it is best to receive medical attention right away.
Keep Documents
Make sure to keep all documents that pertain to the accident. Some of the important details that you should hold onto include the claim number, contact information for the adjuster handling the claim, contact information for involved parties, and receipts for any related expenses.
