Around Town: Episode 3 with Tonya Buchanan

Meet Tonya Buchanan! She has been involved in Parachute in Butler County Casa for 32 years. Parachute has been involved in the court system for 35 years assisting abused and neglected kids so obviously Tonya is very passionate about advocating for children! They have a fabulous staff that understands the court system and helps volunteers called “Casas” advocate for each child in the system who may be abused or neglected.

Casas are people in the community who genuinely care about the children and volunteer their time. As we all know, some children are stunned when an adult wants to spend time with them with no compensation and they actually show up. Casas range from people with a GED’s to retired teachers and nurses. There is a screening process that will pair each Casa with a child depending on individual skills of the Casa and needs.

The goal of the program is for each Casa to get to know the child from beginning to the end of the case (which is approximately a year) and to form a bond and to help advocate for all children that need a voice.
